Making Coffee

Tuesday night
kneeling at the water jug
prepping
Wednesday morning coffee.

glug
…glug
……glug

Ten cups
and I pour
too fast
spilling water.
In the puddle
a finger wags
about a spout’s limitations.

Easing back
absorbs the dribble.
There is only so much volume
a spout can take.

The lip of the spout
the curve of my words
if only
I could apply this lesson
to my tongue.
